Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - Justice (1959)
I’m going back to the well one more time. This version of Monk’s tune is interstellar because of the legendary solo performed here by Lee Morgan, who astonishes the crowd and his bandmates with his effortless invention and complexity, cocksure sense of swing, and the in-joke quotes and cheekiness that he throws in for good measure.
Morgan and Mobley were the crown jewels of Blue Note’s burgeoning hard bop stable, and they demonstrate why their stars were rising on this LP.
